· MESSAGE BY KEN COLLOTON, PRESIDENT OF THE WORLD ALLIANCE OF YMCAs
Upon receiving the issue of “YMCA Observatory” dated June 2011, published by the Young Men’s Christian Association / YMCA of the Republic of Argentina, Kenneth Colloton, President of the World Alliance of YMCAs, sent us, generously, the following message: “It is with great pleasure and satisfaction that I read your current update and observations. The work of your YMCA is substantial and touches the lives of under-served, ordinary, and people of influence, which means that you are very unique to be a considerable valuable and collaborative community asset. I applaud your youth peace work on several continents as you bring the goodwill and experiences of your Argentine people to other YMCA venues- and bring that experience back to your hometowns. Nicely done. Please give my regards and appreciation to your staff and volunteers-especially to your Board and Officers- for the fine contribution of the Argentina YMCA. Reading your observations has made this day a beautiful one for me, thanks so much for sharing.”
· TENTH NATIONAL CONGRESS ON VALUES, CRITICAL THOUGHT AND SOCIAL FABRIC
Argentine YMCA organized the Tenth National Congress on Values, Critical thought and Social Network, on September 22 and 23 at the Auditorium “San Agustín” of the Pontificia Universidad Católica Argentina. Over 500 people attended this activity which presented thirty-two speakers and was developed under the motto: “Imperatives of the Third Century as a Nation: Integral development, social inclusion and culture of meeting”. The main opinion leaders of Argentina’s public and private life had their space in the panels: governors, politicians, social leaders, educators, scientists, members of religious orders, figures of the culture, among others. The Congress was preceded by five pre-congresses in Rosario, Mendoza, Entre Ríos, Salta and in the Province of Buenos Aires. The evaluation was truly positive and the organization process of the Eleventh Congress is already under way, for September 27 and 28, 2012, which motto will be: “Education Quality: challenge for a future with a hopeful horizon.”
· JOINT PUBLICATION: ARGENTINA’s YMCA/ UNICEF
As a result of their joint work during four years, YMCA of Argentina and UNICEF published the following: “Parliaments as space for teenagers’ participation and citizenship education”. The document has been widely distributed and used as a model of program based on the experience of “YMCA’s Parliaments”, an initiative of Argentine YMCA.
· THOUSAND MILLENIUMS
YMCA of Argentina was appointed as Embassy of Peace by the international organization “THOUSAND MILLENIUMS” (MIL MILENIOS). During a ceremony held in the Argentine National Congress in September, Sofía Sánchez Acosta, Vice-chairman of the Board of Directors, received the flag as Ambassador of Peace.
· INTERNSHIPS AND LEADER EXCHANGE
During this summer, Argentina’s YMCA will receive leaders from the YMCAs of Sao Paulo, Brazil, and Montevideo, Uruguay. In turn, a leader will be sent to Sao Paulo. Two professional internships of Argentine YMCA are also planned at the YMCAs of Perú and Montevideo, Uruguay, respectively. In February, we expect the visit of the executive director of the YMCA of Toledo, Spain. In July, a leader of the Argentine YMCA will take part of the programme “Journey for Justice” of the Palestinian YMCA. Additionally, there are other internship and exchange experiences in progress.
· ACKNOWLEDGEMENT OF THE EMBASSY OF AUSTRIA
On November 16, in the emblematic Golden Hall (packed with people) of the House of Culture of the Government of the City of Buenos Aires, the Embassy of Austria granted a special acknowledgement award to Norberto Rodríguez, secretary general of Argentina’s YMCA. In his communication, the Austrian Ambassador to the Republic of Argentina, Mr. Robert Zischg pointed out the following: “I am pleased to inform you that the Government of Austria decided to honour you, among other personalities, for your constant commitment and dedication to the defence of human rights and against discrimination.”
· 110th ANNIVERSARY OF ARGENTINE YMCA
In 2012, Argentina’s YMCA will celebrate its 110th anniversary. A complete program has been prepared for the occasion, in which the inter-religious ceremony to be held at the Buenos Aires Metropolitan Cathedral stands out. This celebration will be presided over by the Archbishop and Primate of the Republic of Argentina, Cardinal Jorge M. Bergoglio.
· YMCA of ARGENTINA INVITED TO ISRAEL
Norberto Rodriguez, secretary general of the Argentine YMCA, has been invited by the AMIA (Argentine-Israelite Mutual Association) and Project Interchange (USA) to form part of a delegation of twelve leaders, all of them social opinion leaders, which will visit Israel in February 2012. Both the World Alliance of YMCAs and the Palestinian YMCA were informed about this by the Argentina’s YMCA. Both organizations gave their solid backing to the project. Argentine YMCA has a close cooperation relation with the Palestinian YMCA framed within the enduring value of justice and peace. For Argentina’s YMCA, the invitation from Jewish organizations represents a substantial and strong acknowledgement.
